PIHS SLASHES COSTS BY 45% TO SUPPORT LOCAL HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES IN BID TO REJUVENATE THE INDUSTRY

Phuket, Thailand, 28 April 2009 - As a group of local hoteliers and businesses in Phuket announce their plans to “cancel” Low Season (April 15 through November 1) and rename it Summer Season, the Phuket International Hospitality Show (PIHS) is throwing in it’s own support by slashing stand prices for the upcoming September 24-26th show by more than 45%.

Achievable only with the generous support of its suppliers, the PIHS has been able to reduce the cost of participation in hope that doing so will bring more hospitality industry service providers and suppliers to the island to reinvigorate the industry and meet with their key clientele.

The concept of renaming the period the Summer Season came about as a grass-roots proactive effort to promote Phuket and to support tourism. The group’s hospitality-related businesses are taking charge in response to the downturn that is affecting the island, rather than rely solely on government and other organizations to tackle the issue on their behalf.

“We’re looking to change the incorrect perception that Low Season weather in Phuket is poor. Phuket is a great destination which also has enjoyable sunny weather right through the year,” commented Dominique Rongé, Executive Assistant Manager at The Chedi Phuket, one of the campaign’s major supporters. “We need to be proactive in delivering our positive message to our audiences that Phuket’s luxury market is thriving despite the world tailspin and that we’re open all year for business.”

The six-month international public relations campaign and internet promotion also looks to counter negative media reports about the effects of the global economic downturn and internal Thailand political issues.

“It’s a time of good value with lower occupancy, great deals on rates and generally a quieter island that hums with local festivals”, says Nick Anthony, Managing Director of Indigo Real Estate.
